A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose term finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a full safety audit. The party stated that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
