Individuals Coming Off Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users buying such drugs need to be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting usually have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural changes.
