As any major honors show approaches, there’s always an outcry for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of fans with niche passions.
A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category during that awards season
- Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
- Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
- Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences in the world and have been for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
